Reliable & Accurate Research

If you’re unable to visit the Bishop Memorial Library & Archives in person, our team would be honored to assist with your research. From family histories and property records to historic newspaper articles and courthouse documents, we’ll help you uncover the stories of Luzerne County’s past.

Research services are $25.00 per request ($20.00 for members) which includes 1 hour of research and up to eight photocopies.

Please allow 4–6 weeks for processing as all research requests are completed in the order received. Payment and a completed request form are required before research can begin.

Research is performed within the resources we hold; we do not perform online research or research at other sites. Please note that despite the results of your requested research, LCHS has a no refund policy regarding research. Please call the Library with any questions prior to submitting your request. We are happy to talk through your desired research!

Whether you’re searching for a family record or an obituary that connects your story to the past, our staff can assist with locating, copying, and delivering materials from our archives and microfilm collections. Obituary & Other Newspaper Article Research

We have Luzerne County newspapers on microfilm with dates ranging from the early 1800s up until approximately 1949; digitized newspapers are accessible from early 1800s to early 1970s. Newspapers from 1950 into the 2000s can be found on microfilm at the local public library, which we can also search for you. All newspaper holdings will be searched within the appropriate time frame for whatever you are requesting, unless you have a request for a specific newspaper. We offer free access to our digitized newspapers via newspapers.com when you visit in person.

If your inquiry goes beyond vital records or newspaper articles, our team can assist with focused research using the manuscripts, maps, photographs, and local history materials held at the Bishop Memorial Library & Archives. Research is limited to the resources in our collection. We cannot conduct online searches or research at outside institutions.
