What first inspired you to volunteer with the Luzerne County Historical Society?

My family and I began attending events at LCHS six or seven years ago. We learned so much and had such a good time that we became members of the society. Volunteering helps us spread that passion to others.

What skills or lessons have you gained through volunteering as family?

Volunteering has helped broaden our knowledge of history and helped solidify our base.

Which period of history interests you the most?

We love all things local history but the time period that excites us the most is our colonial history – from The Yankee-Pennamite Wars to The Battle of Wyoming. We are so fortunate to have two historic homes from the time period owned by LCHS that we can visit and step back in the past.

What’s your favorite local historic site, story, or artifact?

The societies two colonial homes are impressive, but I would have to say the museum & library are our favorites. The museum captures our early Native American history and the collection spans a large timeline up to the modern Giants Despair Hill Climb.

If you could give a tour of Luzerne County to anyone, where’s the first place you’d take them?

We would take them on a drive around historic Harvey’s Lake.

What would you say to someone considering becoming a volunteer?

We would encourage anyone interested in connecting with their community to get out and give volunteering for LCHS a try. It’s very worthwhile and you learn so much while meeting very nice people from “the valley with a heart.”
