On September 6-8, 2019, LCHS is partnering with the Lackawanna Historical Society, the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum, the Plymouth Historical Society, Pennsylvania Labor History Society, and members of the Welsh Heritage community to present a program exploring the Avondale Mine Disaster that occurred on September 6, 1869. The disaster resulted in the deaths of 110 men and boys and led to major changes in Anthracite colliery design. The conference program features sessions on history and heritage and will examine the impacts of the disaster on our region. Pre-registration is requested.
